A New Road to Healing for Female Individuals Seeking Support

New Roads Behavioral Health | WRTH Program
If you (or someone you love) has been told that you’re “too much” or that your mental health condition is “too complex,” our care team at New Roads Behavioral Health offers a different answer.

The WRTH Residential Program (Women’s Road to Healing) was created specifically for women, female-presenting, or genderqueer individuals who need structured, compassionate care for complex mental health conditions.

Located in Utah, this residential program provides 24/7 support, evidence-based treatment, and a therapeutic environment designed to help clients stabilize, heal, and move toward long-term independence.

As a nonprofit, therapist-led organization, New Roads specializes in working with individuals that other programs may not be equipped or willing to treat. WRTH serves women struggling with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, suicidal ideation, mood disorders, trauma-related conditions, and chronic emotional dysregulation.

Here, recovery is never rushed or forced. Clients are met with patience, clinical expertise, and an unwavering belief that:

  • Healing is always possible.
  • Every person deserves a chance to live a meaningful life.
  • At New Roads, they will always have someone in their corner who genuinely cares.

If you or a loved one would like to learn more about our dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) residential treatment program or verify that your insurance is in-network with our Utah facility, speak with our admissions team.

Why Choose Women’s Mental Health Residential Treatment?

Residential mental health and suicide ideation treatment offers a level of support that outpatient care alone often cannot provide.

For many women and gender-diverse individuals, symptoms such as emotional instability, self-harm urges, substance use, or recurring crises make daily life feel unmanageable. A mental health residential program for women creates the safety, structure, and consistency needed to step out of survival mode and begin real therapeutic work.

In our WRTH residential program, clients benefit from:

    • A structured daily schedule that supports emotional regulation
    • 24/7 staff availability for safety, support, and crisis intervention
    • A calm, home-like setting removed from external stressors
    • A coordinated, highly trained clinical team working together toward shared goals

Residential care is especially helpful for individuals who have tried outpatient therapy, intensive outpatient programs (IOP), or hospitalization but continue to feel stuck or unsafe. WRTH provides a supportive space to stabilize, build valuable skills, and prepare for life beyond treatment.

Who the WRTH Residential Program Is Designed For

  • You’ve shown up for outpatient therapy and tried to do all the “right things,” yet still feel overwhelmed, exhausted, or unable to move forward on your own.

  • You’re experiencing hallucinations, intrusive voices, or distorted thoughts that make it difficult to feel grounded or trust your sense of reality.

  • Trauma symptoms, such as flashbacks, nightmares, dissociation, or panic, have intensified beyond what your current environment can support.

  • You’re having a hard time staying or feeling safe, whether that means coping with self-harm urges, suicidal thoughts, or living in a space that undermines your healing.

  • You want care that feels truly coordinated, with therapists, psychiatrists, and wellness specialists working together around your needs in one supportive residential setting.

  • You’re managing more than one challenge at once, like trauma, anxiety, depression, or substance use, and need a women-centered program equipped to treat the whole picture, not just one diagnosis.

For any condition you or your loved one has been living with, you deserve care that feels steady, thoughtful, and human. Our residential team is dedicated to creating a safe and empathetic environment, while offering the clinical expertise needed to support your healing and help you reconnect with yourself.

When you’re ready to talk, we’re here to listen. Your experiences matter, and so does the life you’re working toward.

Our Approach to Therapy at New Roads Behavioral Health

Evidence-Based, Person-Centered, and Collaborative

At New Roads, treatment goes beyond symptom management. Our mission is to help women build lives worth living through connection, skill development, and sustained clinical support.

The WRTH residential program uses a multidisciplinary approach grounded in evidence-based therapies, with a strong emphasis on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). We create individualized treatment plans that are adjusted over time as clients grow and stabilize.

Surrounded by Utah’s peaceful landscape, clients are given the space to slow down, reconnect with themselves, and practice new ways of responding to life’s challenges.

A 30-Hour Per Week Structured Schedule

Clients participate on campus for approximately 30 hours per week, typically across weekday daytime hours. This schedule provides consistency, accountability, and therapeutic momentum without the need for overnight stays.

A structured schedule helps clients:

  • Establish sustainable daily routines
  • Reduce symptom escalation
  • Practice coping and life skills in real time
  • Stay connected to treatment throughout the week

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) Integration

Originally developed for borderline personality disorder, DBT is also highly effective for individuals struggling with emotional dysregulation, self-harm, suicidal ideation, substance use disorders, trauma, depression, and anxiety.

In our DBT and borderline personality disorder residential treatment, clients participate in:

  • DBT skills groups focused on mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness

  • Individual therapy sessions with DBT-trained clinicians

  • Real-time skills practice within a supportive residential environment

DBT helps clients learn how to manage intense emotions, reduce harmful behaviors, communicate more effectively, and build stability that lasts beyond treatment.

An Important Note About Our Facility and Staff Training Requirements:

New Roads, with the on-site and full-time psychiatric care, provides true ASAM-defined Dual Diagnosis Enhanced (DDE) treatment.

On-site clinicians have participated in an 80-hour comprehensive DBT training. Beyond this, most staff members have considerable DBT education, including DBT trauma treatment, DBT Substance Use Disorder treatment, and extensive mindfulness training.

Notably, many of the direct care staff have received comprehensive DBT education, allowing them to offer in-the-moment skills and behavior coaching.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioral therapy helps clients understand how thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are all connected, and how small, practical changes can lead to noticeable relief. Through structured, skills-based work, CBT teaches women to recognize unhelpful thought patterns, challenge what’s keeping them stuck, and respond to life’s stressors with greater clarity and control (even when things feel overwhelming).

Dual Diagnosis Women’s Program

Many female individuals entering WRTH are navigating more than one challenge at the same time.

That’s why our dual diagnosis treatment program provides support in relieving mental health conditions alongside substance use disorders when clinically appropriate. Treatments are integrated and holistic, which means that both conditions are treated together rather than separately.

Through our coordinated clinical model, clients receive support for:

  • Mental health stabilization

  • Relapse prevention and recovery skills

  • Medication management (when needed)

  • Long-term planning for sustained recovery

Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Program

The WRTH program uses an Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) model to ensure clients are supported by an entire team, not just a single provider.

Our ACT team includes certified therapists, psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, case managers, medical assistants, and program leadership. The team meets regularly to coordinate care, review progress, and adjust treatment plans as needed.

Life Skills Training

Healing is not only about feeling better. We also prioritize teaching women how to live full, rewarding lives.

Life skills training is a core component of our WRTH program. Clients practice everyday skills that support long-term independence, confidence, and stability, including:

  • Time management and routine building

  • Budgeting and basic financial skills

  • Meal planning and self-care routines

  • Communication and boundary setting

  • Vocational and educational readiness

Each skill is taught in a hands-on, supportive way, meeting clients where they are and helping them prepare for life after residential care.

Life Inside the WRTH Residential Program

Typically, WRTH clients are referred from acute care settings, insurers, or other programs. Thus, New Roads maintains collaborative relationships with payers, psychiatric hospitals, emergency rooms, law enforcement, and other essential networks. New Roads particularly coordinate with local mental health and general medical facilities.

  • Demographic: The WRTH Residential Program serves clients throughout Utah and nationwide.
  • Admissions are accepted Sunday through Thursday to ensure adequate and quick intervention.

While living on campus, clients receive comprehensive support in a structured, respectful environment. WRTH balances intensive therapy with opportunities for rest, connection, and recreation.

Here’s what women can expect as part of their treatment plan:

Random Drug Testing+

Drug testing is the most obvious way to tell whether a client’s recovery process is on track or if they need additional help with relapse prevention.

Medical Management+
Many of our clients require regular medication to help them manage mental health disorders or other related conditions. We will help them stay on schedule, refill their prescriptions, and ensure their medical well-being. (Additional costs will apply.)
24/7 Staff Availability+
In case of emergency, personal crisis, or any other need, our clients can contact staff members at any time, day or night.

Group Sessions+

These group therapy meetings typically focus on one aspect of treatment at a time, allowing clients to come together to practice their recovery skills. Topics include DBT, cognitive behavior, life skills training, and more.

Individual Sessions+
It is important for all our clients to have a safe space to talk to a knowledgeable, caring professional. One-on-one time with a therapist allows them to share their thoughts, feelings, and concerns without fear of judgment, and helps us determine how best to support their recovery.
Family Sessions+
As family members, your support is crucial to your loved one’s healing process. If you cannot attend in person, these meetings can take place over the phone or via online video conference.
Residential Facility+
Our residential facility at New Roads Behavioral Health is located in Utah. Our certified clinicians have 160+ hours of specialized training and receive continuing education to provide the best medical, psychological, and group therapies possible.
Recreation+
Our treatment programs incorporate various recreational activities, including bowling, skiing, basketball, hiking, and more.
Transitional Program+

For some of our clients, residential care alone isn’t quite enough to help them get back on their feet. Our transitional program provides these individuals with ongoing medical oversight and therapeutic support, while helping them build the skills they need to move forward.

We offer semi-independent apartment living, life skills training, education and internship opportunities, and more — all geared toward ensuring a healthy, successful, and sober future.

Life After WRTH: Step-Down and Transitional Support

Group of diverse young women hugging and smiling outside

Healing is a lifelong journey, and our care team aspires to continue being a part of yours long after you leave residential treatment. At New Roads, we help women move forward with intention, continuity, and a level of support that meets them where they are.

As clients step into the next phase of care, they stay connected to a team that already understands their needs, history, and strengths:

  • Outpatient and Aftercare: A steady layer of support that helps momentum continue while clients return to daily life. Therapy remains consistent and structured, with individual and group sessions, CBT and DBT skills training, relapse-prevention planning, educational groups, and accountability measures as needed. Care plans are thoughtfully designed to fit work, school, and real-world responsibilities.
  • Transitional Living: A supportive bridge between residential treatment and independent living. Clients live in off-campus apartments while participating in approximately 20 hours per week of clinical and group therapy sessions. As confidence and stability grow, women begin building routines, responsibilities, and autonomy, while remaining closely supported by therapy, psychiatry, case management, and on-site staff.

FAQs About Our WRTH Mental Health Residential Program for Women

How is residential treatment at WRTH different from inpatient psychiatric care?

Inpatient psychiatric care is typically short-term and hospital-based, focused on crisis stabilization when someone’s medical needs or safety require immediate attention.

The WRTH residential program provides longer-term, therapeutic care in a home-like setting where clients can build skills, establish routines, and work toward lasting recovery with consistent clinical support.

Does WRTH treat borderline personality disorder (BPD)?

Yes. New Roads Behavioral Health is nationally recognized for its work with borderline personality disorder, and WRTH is specifically designed to support women with BPD using comprehensive DBT-based treatment in a residential setting.

Can WRTH help with suicidal ideation or self-harm behaviors?

Yes. WRTH provides a safe, closely supported environment for individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts or self-harm urges. With 24/7 staff availability, structured therapy, and DBT-based skills training, clients receive compassionate support focused on:

  • Safety
  • Emotional regulation
  • Healthy attachment
  • Stabilization
  • Long-term coping strategies

Do you treat co-occurring substance use disorders in WRTH?

When clinically appropriate, WRTH provides integrated dual diagnosis treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions and substance use disorders. This coordinated approach helps address both challenges together, reducing the risk of relapse and supporting sustainable recovery.

Are family members involved in treatment?

Family involvement is encouraged when appropriate and helpful to the client’s treatment plan. Family sessions focus on education, healthy communication, boundaries, and support, helping loved ones better understand the recovery process.

How long do clients typically stay in the WRTH residential program?

Length of stay (LOS) varies and is determined by each person’s clinical needs, safety, and progress toward goals. Treatment duration is determined collaboratively by the clinical team and adjusted over time to support safety and long-term stability. Our average residential LOS is approximately 74 days.

What happens after residential treatment ends?

After completing WRTH, clients may move on to transitional living, outpatient care, or other supportive programs at New Roads. This continuity of care helps clients maintain progress and continue building independence and working towards healing after residential treatment.

Is WRTH a good fit if other programs haven’t worked for me or a loved one?

Absolutely. Many people turn to New Roads after other programs turned them away or haven’t brought about lasting change.

Our care model is designed for individuals with complex needs, combining therapist-led treatment with DBT-informed strategies and seamless step-down support.

The focus is on building practical, real-world skills, supported by structure and ongoing care. With us, progress doesn’t stop when treatment ends.
