Day Treatment for Mental Health and Dual Diagnosis Care
Partial hospitalization is a structured, intensive day treatment program designed for individuals who need more support than traditional outpatient care, but don’t require 24-hour residential treatment. At New Roads Behavioral Health, our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) provides a high level of clinical care while allowing clients to return home or to supported housing each evening and fully on weekends.
When mental health symptoms are complex, persistent, or worsening, weekly therapy alone is often not enough. Our PHP mental health treatment offers daily structure, consistent therapeutic engagement, and psychiatric oversight in a setting that promotes stability, dignity, and long-term progress.
What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?
A partial hospitalization program is an evidence-based level of care that sits between inpatient or residential treatment and our intensive outpatient program. PHP generally provides 6 hours of comprehensive clinical support during the day, typically five days a week, while allowing clients to maintain their personal connections and daily life outside of treatment.
Partial hospitalization treatment is often recommended when:
- Symptoms significantly interfere with daily functioning
- Safety concerns are present but do not require inpatient hospitalization
- A higher level of structure is needed to prevent relapse or rehospitalization
- Someone is stepping down from residential or inpatient care
- The patient lives in a sober home environment that supports recovery
PHP combines multiple therapeutic services into a single coordinated program, including group therapy, individual therapy, psychiatric services, medication management, and case management.
Is PHP Right for Me or My Loved One?
PHP may be an appropriate fit if you or your loved one:
- Needs consistent daily support for mental health or substance-related concerns
- Has tried outpatient therapy without sufficient improvement
- Is transitioning from residential treatment and needs continued structure
- Is managing a complex diagnosis that benefits from close clinical monitoring
We understand that moving forward with treatment can feel like a big decision. If you are only comfortable asking questions at this time, we are more than happy to provide information on what day-to-day treatment looks like at our Utah facility.
During your conversation, our admissions team can help determine whether PHP is the right level of care and guide you through next steps with clarity and compassion.

What to Expect During Partial Hospitalization Treatment
Our Partial Hospitalization Program is intentionally structured, clinically rigorous, and deeply supportive. Each component of care works together to promote stability and long-term recovery for patients with varying mental health support needs.
Patients can expect the following as part of their partial hospitalization treatment plan:
A 30-Hour Per Week Structured Schedule
Clients participate on campus for approximately 30 hours per week, typically across weekday daytime hours. This schedule provides consistency, accountability, and therapeutic momentum without the need for overnight stays.
A structured schedule helps clients:
- Establish sustainable daily routines
- Reduce symptom escalation
- Practice coping and life skills in real time
- Stay connected to treatment throughout the week
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) Integration
New Roads is nationally recognized for our expertise in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. DBT principles are integrated throughout PHP treatment for clients who benefit from skills-based emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.
DBT-informed care is especially helpful for individuals with emotional dysregulation, self-harm behaviors, or chronic relationship challenges.
Group Therapy in PHP
Group therapy sessions form the foundation of our program. Groups are structured, clinician-led, and designed to foster skill development and shared understanding without pressure to overshare.
Group therapy supports:
- Skill-building and enhanced emotional awareness
- Healthy connections with peers and mutually supportive relationships
- Practicing communication and boundaries
- Learning from others in similar stages of recovery
PHP features multiple group therapy and didactic sessions each treatment day. Led by a counselor, therapist, or other qualified professional, group therapy sessions provide safe and structured environments in which individuals can practice productive interpersonal communication and work on other skills that may be essential to their continued recovery.
At this level of care, patients can expect to take part in psych education groups, process groups, life skills groups, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Skills groups.
Individual Therapy and Case Management
Alongside group work, clients participate in individual therapy PHP sessions tailored to their specific mental health needs and goals. Being able to open up to a knowledgeable, caring professional about one’s thoughts, feelings, and concerns without fear of judgment is an important step for effective treatment. Our therapists treat every one-on-one session with care, sensitivity, and commitment to the patient’s continued progress.
Case management is also integrated to address practical concerns that may impact recovery, including:
- Treatment planning and goal review
- Support with housing, employment, social functioning, sobriety, or education planning
- Continued life skills training
- Coordination with outside providers when needed
Psychiatric Services in PHP and Medication Management
Many people who are dealing with mental health or behavioral health disorders benefit from the incorporation of certain prescription psychotropic medications into their treatment plans.
When a PHP participant has been prescribed medication, he or she meets with a psychiatrist and/or medical staff member for medication management services during their time in PHP.
Medication management in a PHP setting generally includes:
- Psychiatric evaluations
- Medication adjustments and monitoring
- Education and support around medication adherence
- Ongoing coordination between prescribers and therapists
This integrated approach can help stabilize distressing symptoms and support long-term treatment success.
PHP+ Supported Housing Option
For individuals who need additional structure outside of designated treatment hours, New Roads offers a PHP+ supported housing option. This option provides a stable living environment paired with daily PHP treatment.
In this program, participants live in nicely appointed apartments. Staff, who live in another apartment in the complex, frequently conduct welfare checks and provide support as needed. The program offers housing, utilities, med monitoring, case management, and transportation to the office. A reasonable fee will apply.
PHP+ may be beneficial for clients who:
- Do not yet feel safe or supported living independently
- Are transitioning from residential care
- Benefit from accountability and routine outside of the typical treatment hours (30 hours per week)
Supported housing can also connect seamlessly with our Transitional Living Program as clients progress.
