What is Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)?
Borderline Personality Disorder is a mental health condition characterized by intense emotional ups and downs, impulsive behavior, a fluctuating sense of self, and difficulty in relationships. It can feel like an emotional rollercoaster that may be difficult to explain to others or even get off of without support.
As stated by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), an estimated 1.4% of U.S. adults experience BPD. Many individuals with BPD may struggle silently for years.
A few common BPD symptoms include:
- Intense fear of abandonment, whether real or perceived
- Unstable relationships that swing from idealization to devaluation
- Mood instability and difficulty regulating emotions, especially anger, sadness, and shame
- Impulsive behaviors, such as substance use, binge eating, or reckless spending
- Self-harming behaviors or suicidal ideation
These symptoms (and others not listed) can interfere with nearly every aspect of an individual’s life. This can make it difficult to maintain employment or form healthy relationships.
At New Roads Behavioral Health, we understand the unique challenges of BPD and have developed our Life Worth Living Program to provide a new road forward that helps you (or a loved one) experience real, lasting relief and ongoing support.

Why Choose the Life Worth Living Program?
Residential Borderline Personality Disorder treatment offers a level of support that outpatient care alone often cannot provide.
For many women and gender-diverse individuals, the intense symptoms of BPD can make daily life feel unmanageable. Our mental health residential program for women with BPD creates the safety, structure, and consistency needed to step out of survival mode and begin real therapeutic work.
In our Life Worth Living residential program, clients benefit from:
- A structured daily schedule that supports emotional regulation
- 24/7 staff availability for support, safety, and crisis intervention
- A calm, home-like setting removed from external stressors
- A coordinated, highly trained clinical team working together toward shared goals
If you (or a loved one) have already tried outpatient therapy, intensive outpatient programs (IOP), or inpatient hospitalization but still feel stuck or unsafe, residential care can be especially helpful. Life Worth Living provides a supportive space to address severe symptoms, helping individuals stabilize, build valuable skills, and prepare for life beyond treatment.
Who is the Life Worth Living Residential Program Designed For?
- You’ve tried to do all the “right things” and even attended outpatient therapy, yet still feel overwhelmed, exhausted, or unable to move forward on your own.
- You are having a hard time staying or feeling safe, whether that means coping with self-harm urges, suicidal thoughts, or living in a space that undermines your healing.
- You want care that feels more coordinated, where therapists, psychiatrists, and wellness specialists work together to support your needs in one residential setting.
You deserve care that feels steady, thoughtful, and human. Our residential team is dedicated to creating a safe, empathetic environment that provides the clinical expertise needed to support your healing and help you reconnect with yourself apart from your condition.
When you’re ready to talk, we are here to listen. Your experiences matter, and so does the life you’re working toward.
Our Approach to Therapy at New Roads Behavioral Health
Evidence-Based, Person-Centered, and Collaborative
At New Roads, Borderline Personality Disorder treatment goes beyond symptom management. Our mission is to help women build lives worth living through connection, skill development, and sustained clinical support.
The Life Worth Living residential program uses a multidisciplinary approach grounded in evidence-based therapies, with a strong emphasis on Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). We create individualized treatment plans that are adjusted over time as clients grow and stabilize.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) Integration
Originally developed for borderline personality disorder, DBT is also highly effective for individuals struggling with emotional dysregulation, self-harm, suicidal ideation, substance use disorders, trauma, depression, and anxiety.
In our DBT and borderline personality disorder residential treatment, clients participate in:
DBT skills groups focused on mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness
Individual therapy sessions with DBT-trained clinicians
Real-time skills practice within a supportive residential environment
DBT helps clients learn how to manage intense emotions, reduce harmful behaviors, communicate more effectively, and build stability that lasts beyond treatment.
An Important Note About Our Facility and Staff Training Requirements:
New Roads, with the on-site and full-time psychiatric care, provides true ASAM-defined Dual Diagnosis Enhanced (DDE) treatment.
On-site clinicians have participated in an 80-hour comprehensive DBT training. Beyond this, most staff members have considerable DBT education, including DBT trauma treatment, DBT Substance Use Disorder treatment, and extensive mindfulness training.
Notably, many of the direct care staff have received comprehensive DBT education, allowing them to offer in-the-moment skills and behavior coaching.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Dual Diagnosis Women's Program
Many female individuals entering WRTH are navigating more than one challenge at the same time.
That’s why our dual diagnosis treatment program provides support in relieving mental health conditions alongside substance use disorders when clinically appropriate. Treatments are integrated and holistic, which means that both conditions are treated together rather than separately.
Through our coordinated clinical model, clients receive support for:
- Mental health stabilization
- Relapse prevention and recovery skills
- Medication management (when needed)
- Long-term planning for sustained recovery
Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Program
The WRTH program uses an Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) model to ensure clients are supported by an entire team, not just a single provider.
Our ACT team includes certified therapists, psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, case managers, medical assistants, and program leadership. The team meets regularly to coordinate care, review progress, and adjust treatment plans as needed.
Life Skills Training
Healing is not only about feeling better. We also prioritize teaching women how to live full, rewarding lives.
Life skills training is a core component of our WRTH program. Clients practice everyday skills that support long-term independence, confidence, and stability, including:
- Time management and routine building
- Budgeting and basic financial skills
- Meal planning and self-care routines
- Communication and boundary setting
- Vocational and educational readiness
Each skill is taught in a hands-on, supportive way, meeting clients where they are and helping them prepare for life after residential care.
Inside the Life Worth Living Residential Program

Transitional Support Following Life Worth Living
Healing is a lifelong journey. At New Roads, we help women move forward with intention, continuity, and a level of support that meets them where they are.
As clients step into the next phase of care, they stay connected to a New Roads team that already understands their needs, history, and strengths:
- Outpatient and Aftercare: A steady layer of support that helps momentum continue while clients return to daily life. Therapy remains consistent and structured, with individual and group therapy, CBT and DBT skills training, relapse-prevention planning, educational groups, and accountability measures as needed. Care plans are thoughtfully designed to fit work, school, and real-world responsibilities.
- Transitional Living: A supportive bridge between residential treatment and independent living. Clients live in off-campus apartments while participating in approximately 20 hours per week of clinical and group therapy sessions. As confidence and stability grow, women begin building routines, taking on responsibilities, and gaining autonomy, while remaining closely supported by therapy, psychiatry, case management, and on-site staff.
