The Right Borderline Personality Disorder Treatment Can Make All the Difference for You or Someone You Love

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is complex, but it’s also treatable. At New Roads Behavioral Health, we specialize in compassionate, evidence-based care for individuals living with BPD.

Whether you’re seeking treatment in Utah or exploring options from out of state, we’re here to guide you toward lasting stability, real healing, and a life filled with purpose (not just symptom management).

What is Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)?

Borderline personality disorder is a mental health condition marked by intense emotional ups and downs, difficulty in relationships, impulsive behavior, and a fluctuating sense of self. It can feel like you’re constantly riding an emotional rollercoaster, one that’s difficult to explain and even harder to get off.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), an estimated 1.4% of U.S. adults experience BPD. While that statistic might sound small, it translates to over three and a half million people. Many struggle in silence for years, especially if previous treatment hasn’t worked or their symptoms were misunderstood, and ultimately, misdiagnosed.

At New Roads Behavioral Health, we understand the unique challenges of BPD and how it can impact your daily life and relationships. We’re here to offer a new way forward that helps you (or your loved one) experience real, lasting relief and ongoing support.

Characteristics of Borderline Personality Disorder

BPD can present in a variety of ways. Common characteristics include:

  • Intense fear of abandonment, whether real or perceived
  • Unstable relationships that swing between idealization and devaluation
  • Difficulty regulating emotions, especially anger, sadness, and shame
  • Impulsive behaviors such as binge eating, substance use, or reckless spending
  • Chronic feelings of emptiness or worthlessness
  • Identity disturbance that causes confusion and detachment from oneself and others
  • Deeply distressing paranoia
  • Dissociation or feeling “outside” of oneself during periods of stress
  • Intense and often inappropriate bouts of anger
  • An inflated sense of self and narcissistic behaviors
  • Self-harming behaviors or suicidal ideation

These symptoms can interfere with nearly every aspect of life, from maintaining employment to forming healthy, lasting relationships. But with the right support, healing is absolutely possible.

Signs of Borderline Personality Disorder

Many people with BPD are highly intelligent and sensitive, but typically find themselves overwhelmed by:

  • Mood swings that feel impossible to control
  • Intense anxiety or irritability after small interpersonal conflicts or minor events
  • A tendency to “push people away” even when craving connection
  • Hostility toward others, irritability, and even depression
  • Self-sabotaging behaviors they don’t fully understand
  • A history of trauma, abuse, or neglect

If you or someone you care about relates to any of these experiences, seeking a professional mental health evaluation is a critical first step. When treatment starts early, the results are powerful. We don’t just believe that treatment works; we’ve seen it restore stability, self-worth, and hope in the people who needed it most.

Why Mental Health Treatment for BPD Matters

When BPD goes untreated, the consequences can be serious and detrimental to everyone in that person’s life. Someone with untreated BPD may suffer from intense emotional distress, relationship strain, occupational issues, self-destructive or risky behaviors, drastically reduced quality of life, and other mutually occurring mental health complications.

From a medical standpoint, refusing treatment can also lead to higher rates of self-injury, hospitalization, and suicidal thoughts. But that isn’t the whole story. With the right resources and emotional support, many people with BPD go on to live rich, connected, and fulfilling lives.
At New Roads Behavioral Health, we don’t believe that anyone is “too much” or “too complicated.” We treat the whole person — not just the diagnosis or symptoms — with true empathy, clinical expertise, and unwavering support.

Our Approach To BPD Treatment at New Roads Behavioral Health

New Roads is a nonprofit, therapist-led program that specializes in treating complex mental health conditions — especially Borderline Personality Disorder.

Located in the mountains of Utah, our setting fosters calm, clarity, and healing from the moment you arrive.

But it’s not just the environment that makes us different. It’s how we treat people:

  • We say yes when others say no: Many of our clients have been turned away by other programs. At New Roads, we see potential where others see complexity, and we’re not afraid to help.
  • We are experts who truly understand (and care): Our therapists are compassionate and clinically sharp. With 160+ hours of specialized training, plus ongoing participation in intensive workshops for treating various complex mental health conditions, they’re equipped to handle what others can’t.
  • We treat the whole person: You’re more than a diagnosis. That’s why we help you reconnect with your identity, your values, and the kind of life you want to build — one step at a time.
  • We develop a customized treatment plan for you: No two journeys are the same. Your treatment plan at New Roads is built around you: your history, your needs, and what healing looks like in your life.

Whether you need residential care or flexible outpatient options, you’ll find a deeply supportive team of trained mental health professionals that believes in you — even if you’re still learning how to believe in yourself.

Evidence-Based BPD Treatment Therapies We Use

You’re not a checklist of symptoms, and your care shouldn’t feel like one. At New Roads Behavioral Health, we craft personalized, evidence-based treatment plans that meet you where you are and help you get where you want to go.

Depending on your needs, your goals, and your life, our facility offers the following therapies to help treat BPD:

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT is the gold standard for borderline personality disorder treatment, as it’s been proven to reduce a patient’s need for medications and medical care by up to 90%. Developed specifically for BPD, DBT teaches clients how to:

  • Manage intense emotions without damaging and impulsive reactions
  • Build healthier relationships through improved communication skills
  • Tolerate distress or discomfort without engaging in self-harming behaviors
  • Cultivate mindfulness and self-awareness that can lead to positive, permanent change

At New Roads Behavioral Health, we offer one of the few comprehensive DBT programs in the country, structured around five key treatment “modes.” Each mode includes a dedicated support team to reinforce life skills, promote accountability, and guide long-term progress:

  1. Individual Therapy: Private sessions with a trained DBT therapist to work through personal challenges, process trauma, and create targeted goals for recovery.
  2. Skills Training: Group-based learning focused on four core DBT skills: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.
  3. Ancillary Treatments: Supportive therapies such as medication management, movement-based therapy, or trauma-informed care that round out the healing process and support the whole person.
  4. Telephone Consultation: Real-time support from a DBT-trained clinician during emotionally intense moments, helping clients apply their skills when it matters most.
  5. Consultation Team: A collaborative group of DBT providers who meet regularly to ensure clients receive consistent, high-quality, and responsive care throughout their treatment journey.

If you’re searching for “dialectical behavior therapy near me,” New Roads Behavioral Health is a wonderful place to go. Here, you can receive around-the-clock support from people who really care and customized treatment programs that really work.

In addition to DBT, we also offer:

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)

CBT helps clients identify and challenge distorted thinking patterns that often fuel emotional distress, self-doubt, and erratic behaviors. For individuals with BPD, it’s especially powerful when anxiety or depression is also in the mix. By reframing negative thoughts and building healthier thought patterns, clients gain more control over how they think, feel, and respond to the world around them.

Group Sessions

Healing doesn’t happen in isolation. Our structured group sessions offer a supportive, supervised environment where clients can connect with others who deeply understand what they’re going through. These sessions are more than just a place to talk or open up. They’re where real-life relationship skills are practiced, refined, and strengthened with the guidance of trained clinicians.

Individual 1:1 Sessions

One-on-one sessions are the foundation of personalized care here at New Roads. These weekly meetings give clients a safe space to explore their thoughts, emotions, and patterns with a trained therapist who truly listens and understands. For individuals with BPD, these sessions are essential for unpacking trauma, processing relational conflicts, and developing actionable strategies for change.

Life Skills Training & Holistic Therapies

Emotional healing is just one part of the journey. We also focus on helping clients thrive in everyday life. Through personalized coaching and holistic therapies, we teach practical, real-world skills like emotional regulation, conflict resolution, time management, self-care routines, and goal setting: tools essential for long-term independence and well-being.

Psychiatric Services

While therapy is the cornerstone of BPD treatment, psychiatric support can play a key role, especially when symptoms are severe or comorbid conditions like anxiety, depression, or mood instability are present.

At New Roads, clients have access to experienced psychiatric providers and nursing staff members who offer thoughtful medication management as part of a holistic care plan.

We take a collaborative, conservative approach by working closely with clients to monitor how they’re feeling, make adjustments as needed, and ensure any medications support — not replace — the deep therapeutic work happening in treatment. When used appropriately, medication can be a stabilizing force that helps unlock deeper healing.

Common Questions About Borderline Personality Disorder Therapy

How is Borderline Personality Disorder diagnosed?

A licensed mental health provider will conduct a thorough assessment using the DSM-5 criteria (the standard framework used by clinicians to identify mental health conditions). At New Roads Behavioral Health, we also consider your personal history, trauma, and co-occurring conditions to establish a full clinical picture.

What is the most effective treatment plan for BPD?

A combination of evidence-based therapy (especially DBT), medication management when necessary, and structured support systems is the most effective approach: something we specialize in here at New Roads.

What makes DBT Therapy for BPD so effective?

It doesn’t just focus on symptoms. This therapy teaches concrete skills for managing emotions, improving relationships, and staying grounded in the moment.

How long does it take to treat BPD?

Treatment timelines can vary widely. Some people begin to see meaningful improvements in their symptoms within 6 to 12 months, especially with consistent care using evidence-based therapies like DBT. While early progress is promising, lasting recovery requires continued support and sustained care.

We know that healing isn’t linear, which is why we offer a step-down model that supports clients at every stage of their recovery journey. Most begin with residential treatment, then transition to partial hospitalization (PHP) or intensive outpatient care (IOP), followed by general outpatient or virtual support as they build stability. Many also benefit from our transitional living program, which helps bridge the gap between clinical care and everyday independence.

This continuum of care allows us to adjust treatment intensity based on progress, so clients stay supported as they grow, rather than being left on their own too soon. Because while symptoms may ease early on, ongoing support is what turns short-term relief into long-term resilience.

Can BPD be cured or fully treated?

BPD is very treatable, even if it’s not “curable” in the traditional sense. With proper care and consistent support, most people with BPD experience major improvements and learn to thrive long-term.

Is residential treatment necessary for BPD?

It depends. For individuals with severe symptoms, co-occurring disorders, or safety concerns, residential care can be life-saving and deeply transformative.

Will insurance cover the cost of BPD residential treatment?

In most cases, yes. New Roads Behavioral Health is in-network with most major insurance providers, and we know how overwhelming the financial side of treatment can feel.

That’s why our team is here to walk you through the process: checking your benefits, answering your questions, and doing everything we can to make high-quality care more affordable and accessible.

What if I’ve tried therapy before and it didn’t work?

Borderline personality disorder counseling doesn’t always work or “click” on the first try. A person with BPD may feel:

  • Incompatible with their therapist
  • Like a specific therapeutic approach didn’t work for them or made things worse
  • Judged or misunderstood by their therapist
  • Resistant to or incapable of change
  • Pressure to meet unrealistic expectations or goals
  • External stressors are competing with their ability to make real progress in sessions
  • Unprepared to engage in therapy

Many of our clients come to us after feeling let down by past treatment. What makes New Roads different is the depth of our care, the expertise of our clinicians, and a comprehensive DBT program designed for real, lasting change.

Plus, we believe that no matter what you’ve been through — or what you’ve been diagnosed with — you still deserve joy, connection, and a life that feels worth living.

If you’re ready to take that first step, we’re here to walk beside you.
